The Conservative Party need not lose power in the next election. It has at least two ways of achieving this:
1) Promise power to the SNP in a coalition.
2) Allow Scotland to gain independence, removing Scottish (opposition) representation from the Westminster parliament.
It might be venal, and expedient, but it maintains the Conservative Party as the party of government where it counts, as far as the Conservative Party are concerned. Betraying the roots of the 'Conservative and Unionist Party' is nothing compared to everything else that has gone on.
On the contrary, one rather hopes they do. But unluckily, they are far too stupid to be able to grasp at even the fattest of straws, and anyway, Sturgeon is committed to feathering her nest, not independence.
You are correct, I believe, they could do those things and cling on to power. But it won't be allowed; an independent Scotland would mean the loss of the permanent seat on the UNSC. The power implied in that seat is crucial to the City of London.
Whoops! Even worse…Thanks. Corrected.
In my opinion a fair analysis
Matt in fine form here, affirming the observations of many of us with style and incision.
Small note on Poe: It is actually Roderick's twin sister, not wife, who is cataleptic.
Perhaps Britain is ungovernable, in a participative political sense.
It is ruled for sure, and not well, but that is nothing new.

One rather hopes they don't, though.

I suppose it depends on whether you are fortunate enough to live in Scotland.
Rum do if you don't.
I do, but even if I didn't, England needs to get rid of all vestiges of empire, for its own good.
