What is Matt Carr’s Infernal Machine?
Matt Carr’s Infernal Machine is my weekly newsletter. It’s a place where I write without mediation or interference about these increasingly dystopian times. I write about politics and culture, about militarism, terrorism, racism, Brexit, and a whole load of things that are happening and shouldn’t be happening.
I write about a world gone wrong and which has the potential to get a lot worse unless we do something about it, a world where the old rules no longer apply, where demagogues, charlatans, ethnonationalists and an insurrectionist right hold sway - for now.
I’m looking to connect with readers who recognise that these are not normal times, who are looking to find a way to resist this slide into fascism and authoritarianism and find a way to a better place. I don’t write because I have the answers, but because I’m looking to find them, and because too many of our politicians don’t seem to be even asking the right questions.
Who is Matt Carr?
I’m a writer and journalist. My books include The Infernal Machine: An Alternative History of Terrorism ( ‘Carr makes as much sense of terrorism, in its historic and current permutations, as any author is likely to’, - The Boston Globe); Blood and Faith: the Purging of Muslim Spain ( ‘A splendid work of synthesis,’ -The New York Times Book Review ); The Savage Frontier: the Pyrenees in History ( ‘A vivid, deeply informed travelogue’ - Kirkus Reviews ); Fortress Europe: Inside the War on Immigration ( ‘The power of this stirring, authentic account comes from Carr's ability to capture the refugee experience through his face-to-face interviews and his passionate observation of the current scene, including human trafficking, in which women and minors are forced to choose between deportation and exploitation,’ - Booklist ), and The Devils of Cardona ( ‘A] novel that is as exciting as it is enlightening from its first pages to its satisfying end,’ - The New York Times Book Review ).
