New Podcast: 'The Defeated North?'
From Orgreave to Hillsborough: the Miners' Strike and its Aftermath
It’s that time again, when the latest episode of ‘Grim Up North?’ - a Podcast About the North, from the North is out, and I can’t wait to tell you about it, because Episode Three is a very special show.
Adrian and I look at the legacy of the Miners Strike, and specifically the 'Battle of Orgreave.' We examine what actually took place at Orgreave and why that day was the most violent day in the history of the strike.
We trace the connections between Orgreave and Hillsborough, and discuss the brilliant drama Sherwood with Harry Paterson, author of Look Back In Anger: The Miners’ Strike in Nottinghamshire.
We revisit Orgreave with Lesley Boulton, and discuss the iconic photograph of the strike in which she was attacked by a mounted policeman. We have a powerful poem from Adrian, archived news footage, a reading from the nineteenth century radical Samuel Bamford, and excellent contributions from Kate Flannery and Chris Peace of the Orgreave Truth and Justice Campaign.
We wanted to do justice to a historical episode that, as Sherwood reminded us, still haunts the former coalfields and which changed the country forever. Please check it out and let us know what you think, and if you like it, share it! Just click here and it’ll take you right there.
