Hi everyone. I want to draw your attention to my first-ever podcast, which officially launches today. It's called 'Grim Up North': A Podcast from the North/About the North, and I’m co-hosting it with the very wonderful Sheffield-based poet and photographer Adrian Scott.
As the title suggests, it’s a podcast about the politics, culture, and history of the North of England. Our first episode is called True North, and looks at the various attempts to define what the North is and why it has such a special place in our national history and in the conventional understandings of Englishness.
As part of our discussion, we interviewed the historian Brian Groom, author of the new book Northerners: A History, from the Ice Age to the Present Day.
In the coming episodes we'll be looking at the legacies of JB Priestley, George Orwell and Bill Brandt; at Get Carter and David Peace; at Orgreave, the Miners' Strike, and the ‘defeated North’; at the Wigan paintings of Theodore Major and the Pitmen Painters; at the Angel of the North and the impact of religion on the North; at Northern theatre; at Learie Constantine and Lancashire League cricket; at the 'Red Wall' and the North-South divide; at immigration and racism; industrialisation and de-industrialisation, and so much more.
I'm really pleased with this first episode. But I’m sure we can improve. And your feedback and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
