Dear Subscriber. Just wanted to let you know that Episode 4 of ‘Grim Up North: A Podcast About the North, from the North’ has landed. As most of you will know, this is a podcast about the politics, culture and society of the North of England that I co-host with the poet and photographer Adrian Scott.
This month we look at the subject of Northern noir, using the seminal British gangster film Get Carter as our starting point. We discuss how Get Carter changed the way people saw the North, and also changed the way people wrote about it in books, film, and tv drama.
Why was the film so influential? What is the relationship between history and fiction in the writings of David Peace, at the Fargoesque Northern humour of Happy Valley? What does CJ Jung’s concept of the Shadow have to do with all this? Why does Noir actually matter?
We discuss all this and more, with contributions from the acclaimed crime writer AA Dhand, and the psychotherapist and crime writer Lesley McEvoy.
